Ep 14: Evo Terra: Thai Culture Book Chat

April 23rd, 2019

In the podcast episode we chat with Evo Terra ,American Ex-Expat who is also a prolific Podcaster. Some of you might remember him from season 2 of the Bangkok Podcast with Co-Host Greg Jorgensen, However, Evo’s podcast history goes back much farther than this. In fact, his first podcast, Dragon Page, a Sci-Fi book oriented project,  was the 40th podcast of all time. There are rumored to be about 700,000ish podcasts listed in Apple Podcasts right now. He also wrote the first Podcasting for Dummies books. We recorded this interview about the time of his one year reverse culture shock anniversary (exexpatsary?) returning to the U.S. after living in Bangkok, Thailand for a few years. He selected the book, Working With The Thais to talk about. This book helped him understand the work environment culture clashes that he had when he first arrived in Thailand. Evo was someone who saw culture clashes and chose to learn what was happening and what to do to change himself to make his time there enjoyable for everyone involved. That is not to say that there weren’t bumps in the road, and that is where some hilarious culture clash stories make it into this episode. This is an expat story about being a foreigner in a foreign land (it would have been too cliche to use that other SciFi book title here, right?) and realizing that it is YOU that is the problem, not them.

The next episode of Expat Rewind will be published on May 29, 2019.

Ep 13: Mo from the More Sibyl Podcast: From Nigeria to the U.S.

March 18th, 2019

In this episode we chat with Expat Mo from the More Sibyl Podcast. She describes this show as “a podcast about culture and cultural nomads designed for Blacks and Asians and those who love them.” Mo is a Nigerian-born, US-educated, Korean-speaking, Struggling Intellectual. I enjoyed chatting with Mo so much about her Facebook posts from her first year in the U.S. Her reflections on her own posts and the discussion that ensued really got me thinking about what we take for granted when we grow up in a culture AND what we expect others to accept readily when they enter the same culture as an adult. Mo’s honesty, hilarious sense of humor and compassion for others is very inspiring.

Season 3 starts March 19th!

March 14th, 2019

Hello Rewinders,

Just wanted to add a quick message to tell ya two things:

1. A few days ago I was interviewed by the one and only, wonderful human being and excellent Podcaster Heather Welch (yes, I like adjectives and I adore Heather) of the Sunshine and Powercuts Podcast for her Sunshine Summit. It was a blast. Come have a look.

2. The new season for the Expat Rewind podcast will start in a few days, on March 19th. I will post the entire podcast schedule for 2019 here in a bit but know that Expat Rewind will be nearly monthly for 2019, until we shift our focus to its more bookish leanings by the end of the year.

What am I talking about? We are going to narrow our focus more and more in 2019 until we only are talking to expats about books. It didn't even dawn on me to bring books too much into the podcasting mix until Nicole from the Expat Cast podcast had me on her show for a book focused chat. Oh my was it fun!

3. YouTube channel

I am also working on getting the YouTUBE part of the podTUBE caught up. For new Rewinders, this podcast is where I interview other expats about their cultural adjustments and the things (soon to be only books) that helped them through those hard times AND the YouTube channel is where I am reading a blog I wrote during my worst culture shock year in Taiwan in 2003/4, and reflecting on it from another part of Asia, Shanghai, China. Once all previous 60 episodes are polished and on the YouTube channel I will switch to live stream videos for each reading. This will start in June 2019 so keep an eye out for that cause I would love to answer your questions during the blog readings during these events. I am thinking Sunday evening my time, which would be Sunday morning for those of you in the U.S.

More soon,

Steph

Ep 12: Miicher Elmore of The China Chronicles-From Miami to Shanghai

December 18th, 2018

This week we expat chat with first time expat, Miicher, a Florida, US native who decided it was time for a change. Miicher is a teacher, an actor, a mom and a natural storyteller, which explains why her Facebook China Chronicles , where she has been sharing her experiences in Shanghai, China, have become such a hit. Usually in Expat Rewind we chat with expats after their first year but we thought it would be fun to do a preview episode with Miicher during her first year and then reflect back on this episode after she reaches that milestone. She arrived in Shanghai in August 2018 so look out for the second part of this interview in August 2019.

Ep 11: Hannah Lund: From the US to Hangzhou, China

November 26th, 2018

This week we expat chat with Hannah Lund, who is magnetic, funny and thinky. Her geographic trajectory includes her home state of Minnesota and a quiet town in Iowa in the U.S., Paris, France and Hangzhou, China. In 2012 it was a mystical story involving a character called Madame White Snake, set in Hangzhou, which was the inspiration for this move to China but Hannah soon found out there were so many more unexpected surprises that would come from this experience. After 6 years in Hangzhou she moved up to Shanghai, which seemed like an apt time to look back at that first year in China in this podcast episode. She uses her short story, “In Search of White Snake”, from the May 2018 edition of Concrete, The Shanghai Literary Review’s revered publication.

After Hannah’s animated reading of this piece we chat about many of the expat issues that it brings to the surface (every pun intended), such as her “sense of urgency” to make things happen, facing the differences between the China in her mind and the one in front of her, and a general fascination with ghost stories (how is that expat related? You will need to listen to find out!) We are so pleased to have Hannah in Shanghai now and I am sure you will be thrilled to have her story and wisdom in your ears for this episode.

Ep 10: Karl: From the UK to Denmark

November 12th, 2018

Originally from the UK, Karl discusses how he found himself in Denmark, the experiences of his first year and how music helped him to feel at home in his adopted country. He chose The National’s “Trouble Will Find Me” album from 2013 as a jumping off point to discuss the ups and downs of his transition into expat life in Denmark. In the interview Karl briefly mentions his current studies and internship at Sleeknote, which “helps small e-commerce shops and big online retails engage website visitors—without hurting the user experience” and he wanted to share this Sleeknote scholarship with all of you. Thank you for spreading the word about this wonderful opportunity.

Ep 9: Pia: From Finland to China

October 29th, 2018

Pia and her family just recently left Shanghai, China after living here for two years. I have met some active expats in my life but Pia takes the cake on really living life the fullest. She explored China, worked and volunteered locally, all while raising two intelligent and worldly daughters. How did moving to the U.S. a few years ago help her to make this transition to living in China? Come have a listen to the answer to that question and more as we explore a blog of hers from this time period.

Ep 8: Jennifer: From America to China

October 15th, 2018

Many of us are promised things growing up in a certain culture and often those promises are never actualized. Jennifer is an American who had been to over 70 countries before moving to China to teach at an international school but that did not stop this home country disappointment from kicking in. In this episode she reads a poem that she wrote a bit after her first year in China to her father about these cultural promises. And as we often do in Expat Rewind, we spend quite a while unpacking what this poem and the frustration in it means to her now, what has changed since she wrote it and so much more.
